Team Out of Town Blog Hub (Outoftownblog.com) – Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco has directed the DOT regional offices to coordinate with their respective local government units (LGUs) to determine the extent of earthquake-related damage and extend assistance to tourism-related establishments (TREs) affected.

Frasco also directed the DOT’s infrastructure arm, the Tourism Infrastructure Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), to explore the agency’s assistance, particularly to the cultural and heritage sites affected by the intense earthquake that rocked the northern part of Luzon.

Based on initial reports, at least 2 churches declared “National Cultural Treasure” by the National Museum of the Philippines were affected, while several heritage and ancestral houses also sustained notable damage due to the earthquake.

“We will request TIEZA to prioritize assessment of the cultural treasures affected by the recent earthquake recognizing the need to protect and sustain our heritage and cultural treasures for the benefit and welfare of our future generations,” Tourism Secretary Frasco said.

Per the initial report of the DOT Regional Offices, particularly Region 1 and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), damage in several tourist destinations as well as private properties was recorded in the following tourist destinations:

Abra

In Abra, where the earthquake’s epicenter was recorded, damaged tourist sites included the Sta Catalina de Alexandria Church, a 19th-century baroque church declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2001.

Also heavily damaged was the San Lorenzo Ruiz Shrine, a centuries-old church completed in 1803 in the Municipality of Bangued. The shrine is a National Cultural Treasure, the oldest and largest in the Cordilleras.

Ilocos Sur

The Heritage City of Vigan, known for its Spanish colonial and Asian architecture, recorded damage in popular tourist destinations such as the Vigan Cathedral.

The Syquia House, an ancestral home turned museum in Vigan, reported having a collapsed side wall and windows. The Hotel Linda also reported minor damage and several heritage and ancestral houses along the Vigan Heritage Village.

The Bantay Bell Tower in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, almost collapsed during the intense quake. The St. John The Baptist Church in San Juan, Ilocos Sur, recorded damage to its façade and ceiling.

Meanwhile, multiple ground faulting is visible in the Santa Ana Beach Area, which is also a favorite tourist spot among visitors.

Baguio City

In Baguio City, two accommodation establishments, the Lafayette Luxury Suites Hotel and Crown Legacy, reported minor cracks in their buildings. In the meantime, both hotels will not accept visitors to ensure the safety of guests and personnel.

TIEZA properties

Two properties managed and owned by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), DOT’s infrastructure arm, also sustained damage. The riprap and ceiling of the Banaue Hotel and Youth Hostel in Ifugao partially collapsed, according to the agency’s initial report.

Meanwhile, the earthquake caused the ceiling in the fireplace and lobby area of the Mt. Data Hotel in Bauko, Mt. Province, to collapse, while several hotel decorations were also damaged. According to TIEZA, all bookings will be canceled in both hotels until a thorough assessment has been undertaken.

“My concern and sympathy are one with those who have been affected by the recent earthquake in Northern Luzon. The Department will extend whatever help it can to tourism stakeholders and establishments that have been directly affected by this incident. I have requested the DOT Regional offices in Northern Luzon to continue with the assessment of the extent of the damage and to immediately submit the report for our appropriate actions and assistance,” Secretary Frasco said.

“Our resilience as a nation has already been tried and tested in the past. I am certain that this can be strengthened by the essential collaboration between our national agencies, local governments, and crucial stakeholders as we conquer our challenges,” she added.

No tourists were reported harmed, but those with travel plans to the Northern Luzon area are advised to practice extra precautions.

158th Birth Anniversary of Apolinario Mabini

Team Out of Town Blog Hub (Outoftownblog.com) – After two years of suspending commemorative celebrations due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Apolinario Mabini was once again given a sublime tribute on his 158th birth anniversary held recently at his hometown in Tanauan City, Batangas.

The City Government of Tanauan, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), and the Provincial Government of Batangas led the simple but meaningful observance.

The event was held at the Mabini Shrine, an NHCP historical complex that features a replica of the humble nipa hut where the hero was born in 1864, the tomb where he was reinterred in 1956, and several interactive museum galleries on his personal memorabilia and the Filipino-American War where he figured prominently.

Situated at barrio Talaga by the shores of the Taal Lake, the Shrine is one of Tanauan’s top historic tourist destinations.

Taking a special part in the celebration is the Department of Tourism Calabarzon Region which brought members of the Republica Filipina Reenactment Group, an association of professionals which seeks to rekindle public awareness and patriotism through the portrayal of the Philippine Revolution’s historic personalities and events.

The regional office’s participation in the historic event is in line with the thrust of DoT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco to promote museums as part of local tourism circuits.

According to DoT Calabarzon, officer-in-charge Marites Castro, the regional office has showcased museums, national shrines, ancestral homes, old churches, and other heritage structures in their itineraries, particularly in the newly-formulated Center for Fun circuits for Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon.

Mabini, regarded as the Sublime Paralytic and Brains of the Revolution, was born to humble beginnings, studied law, and authored writings on the guiding principles for freedom fighters, most notably the El Verdadero Decalogo (The True Decalogue).

He became the legal and constitutional adviser to the Philippine Revolutionary Government and later as Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Secretary of the First Philippine Republic headed by President Emilio Aguinaldo.

He died in 1903 at age 38, was buried at the Chinese Cemetery, and later transferred to the Manila North Cemetery’s Maosuleo Delos Veteranos de la Revolucion.

DOT7: FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS EVOLVING INTO A STRONG TOURISM PRODUCT

Filipino Martial Art

Team Out of Town Blog Hub (Outoftownblog.com) – The Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) is fast becoming a strong tourism product with great potential, the Department of Tourism – Central Visayas (DOT7) observes.

DOT7 extended its support to the 16th World Championships of the World Eskrima, Kali, Arnis Federation (WEKAF) held at the Mandaue City Sports Complex from July 16 – 21, 2022.

Filipino Martial Art

About 400 delegates from 10 countries participated in the forms and sparring competitions featured in the week-long gathering.

Gelena Asis-Dimpas, DOT7 Chief Tourism Operations Officer, says that Central Visayas “has gained unprecedented popularity as the hub of FMA.”

Cebu, in particular, Dimpas adds, boasts over 30 diverse FMA systems or styles, the most number found in a single area. Practitioners and enthusiasts organize visits to the Philippines to learn the numerous configurations of FMA and various fighting styles. They also participate in training camps and tournaments.

Cebu is the birthplace of eskrima and WEKAF. WEKAF hosted the first international games in Cebu City in 1989, the year of its founding.

FMA consists of performance-based and competitive systems using hands, sticks, and bladed weapons. It traces its beginnings to the time when Filipinos developed ways of defending themselves from attackers using just their hands, sticks, or whatever material was within reach. Sticks, knives, and other materials were incorporated into the routines as hand extensions. Over time, practitioners integrated science and culture into the art, and various styles have been discovered – hand-to-hand combat, stick-fighting, grappling, and disarming.

The diversity of FMA systems – in routines, techniques, weaponry, and rituals – ensures that there is always something new to discover at each club or group.

In partnership with the masters and grandmasters of diverse eskrima systems, the DOT7, through its Cultural Tourism Program, is developing FMA Heritage Trails to promote appreciation both as sport and art form. “FMA is an authentic Filipino product and is definitely part of our national heritage. It is not only interesting both as art and sport; it is another means by which we share our identity and forge friendships with the rest of the world,” Dimpas stated.

Secret lagoon in El Nido, Palawan is Hailed as one of the World’s Best. July 23, 2022 at 12:07AM

Secret Lagoon in El Nido, among “Top 50 Best Beaches in the World”

Team Out of Town Blog Hub (Outoftownblog.com) – Avid travelers and travel enthusiasts alike have probably known the Philippines to be a haven for some of the best beaches in the world, giving merit to its reputation as one of the most visited destinations in Asia. But while hotspots like Boracay and Bohol, to name a few, often make the headlines, some lesser-known places in the country also deserve the same acknowledgment as the frontrunners. One of those locations is a lagoon so hidden within El Nido, Palawan, that it earned the moniker of “Secret Lagoon”.

Secret Lagoon in El Nido by Tuan Nguyen via Flickr cc
Secret Lagoon in El Nido by Tuan Nguyen via Flickr cc

The Secret Lagoon is not only interesting for its rather exclusive and secluded location, though. Mystery-aside, this small body of water, which sits alongside the wider ocean expanse, is equally as special for its looks—consisting of a menagerie of stunning rock formations, white sand beaches, and of course, the untouched seawaters. If nature is considered a work of art, this particular spot within the already majestic El Nido is a magnum opus. It is so beautiful that it could, perhaps, make even the greatest painter cry in overwhelming admiration.

El Nido New Normal Requirements and Safety Guidelines
El Nido Travel Requirements and Safety Guidelines

But the Secret Lagoon’s presence is not so secretive, after all. Just recently, reputable travel platform Big 7 Travel had uncovered the place and even regarded the closed-guarded gem as the sixth-best beach in the world, overtaking more than 40 others in the overall ranking. The travel website describes the Secret Lagoon as “a hidden bay with crystal clear water, white sandy beaches, and tropical jungle,” though preceded with the more curious instruction on how to get to the place. The process is not necessarily Herculean, but having to enter through a hole in limestone rocks? Not for the faint of heart, but surely, color us all intrigue.

To be fair, the travel platform did not include any of the already popular ones, as the listing focuses on the so-called hidden gems that not many know about. So, unsurprisingly, no Boracay or Bohol on the list. Still, to rank as one of the top 10 in a far longer roster speaks volumes about how the Philippines could compete with many of the bests in the world through this one small region in the entire archipelago alone.

Did you find the idea of visiting a shrouded body of water in the greater expanse of El Nido to be truly riveting? Why not consider taking an El Nido tour package that will make your trip easier and more organized and lead you to many of the area’s tourist-worthy places, especially the Secret Lagoon.

The Experience

What makes this program different from any program like it is that Enderun focuses on students who will not only be equipped with the knowledge they need in the creative aspect but also in the field of how they will use that knowledge money-wise.

For instance, art programs just work out the artistic side of every artist student. You can no longer say that there’s no money in doing arts since Enderun promises that they will also be taught entrepreneurship, leaving their pieces of artwork into hard cash.

The teaching will be individualized, they will have a small number of students per class, and in addition to the course work, students will have various activities to expand their creativity and exchange ideas through exhibitions, showcases, competitions, and various other forms.

Acushla and Annika also share that with Boracay opening up to tourists, white beaches can get overwhelming if you’re someone who wishes to experience a more relaxing, chill, and less crowded vacation in Boracay while still only being a 10-minute walk from station 1, Microtel Boracay is the best hotel to stay in at Diniwid Beach. Acushla said, “I would say I really love staying on this side of town. It’s much more low-key, and it’s always exciting to see the more local things.”

Sunset Dinners by the Beach

The surprises did not end there as Microtel Boracay arranged a lovely sunset dinner by the beach for the family to enjoy. Prepared with pink balloons and delicious meals from one of the hidden food gems on the island, Mama’s Fish House, the celebration of Avianna’s birthday was in full swing. The chef even made her a customized birthday cake to end the day with.

Microtel Boracay is the perfect partner to plan out surprises for your loved ones, couples celebrating anniversaries, or families celebrating birthdays and other special occasions. From surprise birthday pancakes, room service wine deliveries, or even decorating the room with balloons and banners, Microtel Boracay’s thoughtful staff can help you make special days even more memorable.

Acushla and Annika also personally recommend visiting Mama’s Fish House and share that the Mahi-mahi is a must-try dish apart from the House Fish and Chips. “Annika and I would drive all the way to Diniwid just to eat Mama’s Fish House seafood. So fresh and so well-cooked.” Acushla says in her vlog.

All employees of Microtel have been vaccinated and strictly implement the government-mandated health and safety protocols. So, what are you waiting for? Grab your friends and family and head on to Microtel Boracay to experience a one-of-a-kind stay on your own white sandy beach. Book your reservations now at https://www.microtel-boracay.com/.

It is also a sought-after venue for weddings and receptions because of the romantic ambiance that this mountain resort evokes.

To reposition Tagaytay Ridge as a wedding haven after the Taal Volcano eruption and the Covid-19 pandemic, The Oriental Luxury Suites recently held the Wedding Coffee Date, a one-day expo showcasing the top service providers in the area.

Situated along the Tagaytay national road in Alfonso, Cavite, The Oriental is a royal Thai-themed boutique hotel overlooking Taal Lake and Volcano. It boasts of a 200-person function hall, exquisite Asian furnishings, six intimate executive suites, a presidential suite, and a mountain resort ambiance that will transport you to the ancient Siamese kingdom.

The Wedding Coffee Date is envisioned to be a quarterly fair to entice couples from Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, and other parts of Luzon to tie the knot in the romantic ridge resort and re-energize the special events industry in the area.

Beyond weddings, The Oriental seeks to become an aspirational destination for trendy travelers who prefers a homey but elegant lodging away from the madding crowd.

It is just a few minutes away from the popular farm and garden-themed resorts and restaurants, which tourism and health authorities consider safe havens during the pandemic era.
